Product Description

What is a soap nut?

Soap Nuts are the fruit of the Chinese Soap Berry Tree. These amazing berries are harvested and then dried in the sun. No chemicals of any kind are added to our soap nuts. Laundry detergent with heavy chemicals is replaced with something all natural and totally organic. The soap nut contains a natural soap called saponin. Saponin has cleaning abilities equal to toxic chemical detergents. Soap Nuts are extremely hypo-allergenic and can be used by people who are allergic to all other detergents. They are completely green and don't pollute our planet. Soap Nuts go by many names, such as soap berries, wash berries, wash nuts, Ritha, Reetha, Aritha, Dodan, Doadni, Doda, Kanma, Thali.

Do they cost extra, like most green products?

Most non-toxic cleaning products cost more than the products they replace. Soap nuts cost much less than toxic chemical detergents. Add in the cost of fabric softener or dryer sheets and soap nuts cost two and a half times less.

How do I use them?

Just place 3 to 5 whole soap nuts in the included drawstring wash bag and toss it into the washer with your clothes. Don't use any detergent, fabric softener or dryer sheets. The 1 Kilo bag includes 3 draw string wash bags. The 500 Gram bag includes 2 wash bags. And the 250 Gram bag includes 1 wash bag. Even after shipping almost all of your soap nuts will be whole when you receive them. We recommend breaking them in half before you put them in the draw string wash bag so water can circulate freely through the inside of the shell so they can release their saponin easier. Soap nuts work equally well in top loaders or the newer HE front loaders. With a top loader expect about 4-6 wash loads using the same soap nuts. With a front loader HE machine you can expect about 7-9 wash loads. The best way to tell if your soap nuts are used up is to put your used soap nuts in a jar with a lid with a few ounces of water and shake them up. If you get suds, you can get another load out of them. Pour the sudsy water in the washer and put the soap nuts back in the wash bag and toss them in for another load. Remember that the hardness of water has an effect on all cleaning products. Water hardness and other factors are different all across the country. So start with our recommendations and then experiment. Try using fewer soap nuts, then more and see what works best in your area. Even if you get it wrong they still work great. Your just trying to optimize your consumption of soap nuts. Your clothes will come out smelling amazingly fresh like you hung them outside on a clear spring day. Plus, your clothes will be softer and more absorbent than ever, which is amazing because you never use fabric softener or dryer sheets with Soap Nuts. Soap Nuts are equal to Tide in cleaning ability. So if you used bleach for your whites before, you can still use bleach for whites (we recommend oxyclean as it is non toxic) and pre spotters for tough stains.

What is the quality of Green Virgin Products Soap Nuts?

Green Virgin Products Soap Nuts are sealed in a biodegradable plastic bag, at the precise moment when they reach the peak of perfection. This is an important distinction as some sellers don't have their soap nuts cleaned and packaged in India so they are exposed to the elements during the long ship ride to the USA. This can take a month or two at sea where the soap nuts will be absorbing the salt sea spray and any humidity in the air. They will be in hot or very cold temperatures and they will be absorbing moisture or getting very dried out. They can become contaminated with bacteria or mold due to the moisture where as ours are sealed in plastic and are unaffected by the sea voyage. We sell only the highest quality USDA Certified Organic, Sapindus Mukorossi soap nuts available in the world. We import Green Virgin Soap nuts from the best growers in India. Labor is far less expensive in India and Nepal so our soap nuts are harvested, dried, hand sorted, cleaned, packaged and labeled there. We pass the savings on to you. We buy our soap nuts from a company in India that has been in business for over 100 years and does over one billion dollars a year in sales. That's why we can boast the highest quality and the lowest price. Remember soap nuts are basically produce. Produce is not like a car where a higher price usually means higher quality. But with soap nuts, a higher price just means they are trying to make more profit than we are or they didn't buy them as smart as we did. You might be able to find soap nuts as good as ours, but better soap nuts are not available at any price, period.

What health hazards can I help avoid by using Soap Nut detergent?

Chemical laundry detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets should be avoided at all cost. These products contain chemicals classified under federal law as carcinogens, toxic and hazardous. Some are on the EPA hazardous waste list. The list of health hazards associated with the chemicals in laundry products is staggering and extremely serious. The list includes cancer, central nervous system depressant, kidney damage, headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, twitching muscles, convulsions, fatigue, liver damage, birth defects, Alzheimer's disease, sudden infant death syndrome, reproductive problems and many more. For proof of this, just Google "laundry detergent health hazards" or click on the health hazards button, just under the pictures on each page of this site. This is not a myth, it's a fact. There are known carcinogens in nationally advertised brands of laundry detergents, fabric softener and dryer sheets. Did you know that the European version of the EPA has banned about 1000 chemicals? The EPA in America has banned a total of 4 chemicals and has not banned a single chemical since 1976. The EPA tried to ban Asbestos but failed in the courts and Asbestos is still being manufactured and sold in huge quantities in the USA even though it a known carcinogen. The EPA has not even tried to ban another chemical since. It is illegal to sell American laundry detergents and fabric softeners in Europe, because they contain hundreds of banned chemicals. Yet Americans buy and use these toxic products every day. The big soap companies make billions of dollars a year while Americans are slowly being poisoned, along with our rivers, lakes and coastal waters. For a happy healthy family, buy Green Virgin Soap Nuts and use our non toxic cleaning products.

I am so impressed by this product. It is very inexpensive, especially when compared to other natural cleaners available for purchase. I will be a life long user of soapnuts.

  2. Love this product

Posted by lynda on May 12th 2013

We have purchased 3 bags of this now. We love the product. My husband is picky about clothes and he loves it. The clothes are clean and soft. He loves the money we save using this product and that we are using a natural product. It is good for us, our machines and the water supply. I tell everyone about it.

I bought soapnuts on the recommendation of blog that
I follow. I gave half to my mom to try out, too. We are both way more than impressed. The soapnuts even got the Oklahoma red dirt out of my son's blue jeans. Great stuff. I will definately be a repeat customer!

  5. Loving the soap berries!

Posted by Patti Ramsey on Mar 28th 2013

I am really loving the soap berries. I have shared them with friends and so far, people really like them. I tried making my own detergent and wasn't happy with it. But the soap berries are just the best!!

  6. The soap nuts are awesome!

Posted by Heath Hoover on Dec 24th 2012

I have really enjoyed using the soap nuts. They clean and de-odorize better than any detergent. It makes me feel good that I am using an all natural, chemical free laundry soap. I sell them in my store and the feedback is always positive and grateful that I have them. On average I use five shells and they last six loads. I would recommend them for anybody especially if you have sensitive skin, they are great. There are not any added cleaning agents that will irritate your skin. Also, they come packaged in cotton bags so it cuts down on plastic waste products. Thank you Green Virgin Products!

  7. Awesome product

Posted by Denine on Nov 6th 2012

I am so happy with this product! I've had eczema & contact Dermatitis for decades & hate to try new products cause they all give me a rash. This sounded so natural, I purchased a bag and have been using them since last January and it leaves no perfume scent either...just clean, soft, fresh laundry!

  8. Nuts for soap nuts

Posted by Nancy S. on Oct 20th 2012

I am very pleased with the results of the soap nuts. I'll be honest I was a bit skeptical when I ordered them and just couldn't imagine how they could really clean and also leave clothes soft and fresh smelling. I have used commercial detergents and fabric softeners for so long I wasn't sure the soap nuts could do as good or better than the commercial ones. I was very surprised at how the clothes smelled and how soft they were when they dried.I have a front loader and in the past I have had problems with fabric softener building up inside the machine and making it smell real funky. It would start making the washed clothing smell as well. The soap nuts leave the machine smelling very clean. So far have been real pleased with the results. One other thing is that I can use each bag for about 5 or six loads before they quit sudsing. If you want to get away from all those harmful chemicals that are in regular detergents give this soap nuts a try and be amazed.

  9. Wonderful product!

Posted by Cindy J. on Oct 13th 2012

Just started using soap nuts. After 2 weeks of use, I couldn't be more pleased. My laundry comes out clean, fresh and so soft. No need for fabric softener. All natural, no chemicals!

  10. No Waste, No Harm, No Problem

Posted by MD on Oct 4th 2012

I have been using soap nuts for nearly three years and refuse to use anything else except the occasional spot treatment for particularly nasty stains. I love knowing that this product adds NOTHING to the waste stream leaving my house and that (unlike other 'natural' products) contains no harsh salts that scrape and damage fabrics. I first tested in on a filthy dog bed cushion, which came out nice and clean, smelling like it had been dried on a line on a sunny day. The dog LOVED it, and the people in the family have loved the product ever since.

  11. FABULOUS!!!!

Posted by Carla B. on Aug 16th 2012

I LOVE this product! It is a wonderful alternative to toxic store brand soaps. I will NEVER use anything else. The soap nuts have an odd smell, BUT leave NO smell on laundry! Clothes come out smelling fresh and clean. These are also VERY cost effective. I got my mom to try them too,and she also loves them. I don't want to be harsh, and am merely trying to encourage you to try these, with my next statement. You would be STUPID, if you don't at least buy the smallest bag, and try them! You WONT be sorry, and then you will post a review like me. ENJOY! SOAP NUTS ARE THE BEST!

  12. Best "detergent" out there

Posted by Stephany on Aug 11th 2012

I've been using soap nuts for all of our laundry, including my daughter's cloth diapers for 10 months now. They leave our clothes and diapers extremely clean, smelling fresh as if I just washed them in a clean river on a mountain top and sssooo soft without using any fabric softener. I recommend them to everyone. The 1.1 lb bag lasts me about 3 months and I do about 15+ loads a week. My husband has also used to wash our dogs leaving their coat nice and shiny and smelling fresh! We have also used them to wash our cars with.

  13. In LOVE with Soap Nuts

Posted by Suzie on Jul 30th 2012

I've been using Soap Nuts for 7 months now and my husband and I just love them. Our clothes smell fresh and clean without the chemical fragrance of traditional detergent. They are highly effective for a fraction of the cost of traditional products as well. A 500 gram bag lasts me 6 months. I am sold. We will never go back. Thank you for making such an amazing product available. I try to convert everyone I know! LOL

  14. Love Soap Nuts

Soap nuts really work. They leave your clothes smelling fresh and clean

  15. Amazingly Effective!

Posted by Evelyn Adams on Jun 24th 2012

I used regular detergent for many years, although I did use the "FREE" varieties to cut down on the allergy issue. However, since I've started using soapnuts, not only do I save tons of money, my clothes are much cleaner than they ever got with commercial detergents. I find stains come out much more easily, and odors from sweat, etc disappear.

  16. Everyone realized over the course of the week that they really worked.

Posted by Brandon on Jun 24th 2012

I own Tribeca ColorSalon, located in Tampa, FL. Several years ago, I rewrote the company’s mission statement to include sustainability as one of our core values. To that extent I’ve eliminated a lot of waste, switched to organic and non-toxic cleaning solutions and recycling. After running out of my usual laundry detergent from an Eco-friendly company I went online to look to purchase more. I then found a link that led me to Green Virgin Products. There I discovered soap nuts. I was quite skeptical but when I found out the distributor was here in Tampa, I thought that I had nothing to lose by getting a sample from them. The staff used the nuts in the laundry and immediately we could tell a difference. The towels for the salon were clean, but without heavy fragrance and we could run them through the dryer without a fabric softener sheet. Even though some people were skeptical, everyone realized over the course of the week that they really worked. Here is a list of what we discovered:

The fabric of the towels was softer, and the color on our new towels seems to be fading less than before with detergent.

We use a bag of 5 nuts each day, usually lasting 7 loads, so it’s very inexpensive to use.

My clients that have complained of allergies have no reaction to the towels anymore.

So overall, it’s been a great change. Now honestly the nuts do not have a perfumery cosmetic fragrance, but I am looking for an eco friendly laundry solution, not perfume. It is a cost effective, all-natural solution to my salon’s main Eco-problem; doing tons of laundry everyday without negatively impacting the environment!

  17. Wow!

Posted by Carol on Jun 24th 2012

    "My order arrived Friday--thank you!

I had a backlog you wouldn't believe of sheets and towels so I took my new nuts to a friend's house and used her front loader. Even with
organic/eco friendly detergents I often break out in a rash if I don't double rinse my clothes, so I was a little skeptical about using the nuts in the front loader since there's no opening the door prior to the rinse cycle unless you use the jaws of life.

Wow! One towel in particular was especially rank after a gardening session with a fish emulsion/manure tea accident. I left it on the
back porch for over a week and the aroma had not improved in that time. It came out soft and clean and fragrance free. By the way, it's true that you need to treat tough stains with some other means (I'm a fan of oxyclean
and fels naptha soap) but for getting rid of everyday dirt and stink and leaving everything soft and smell free they can't be beat. No
more second rinse and no more dryer sheets--hooray!

I did ten loads in three days. After the first four I started testing the bag of nuts by shaking them in the jar of water you suggested. Our water is particularly hard, so I was surprised at how sudsy the water got even after NINE loads! I'm talking suds, not foaming froth like you get from all the poisons. I put six new nuts in the bag for the tenth load and boiled/simmered the old six nuts for half an hour to see what would happen.

I got a little over a cup of weak tea colored liquid and used it to clean some lawn furniture. Again, Wow!"

  18. Incredible product!!!!

Posted by Ellen on Jun 24th 2012

I am so glad that I was introduced to soap nuts. I had read about them on the Weston Price message board and wanted to give them a try.
For laundry, I have not been disappointed and in fact, quite surprised that the static was not a problem when I removed my clothing from the dryer. I always used dryer sheets to prevent that and really was not expecting such a good result. The clothes also have been coming out clean and fresh.
Now to the part that really blew me away. One of the ladies said she made the liquid version and used it to wash her hair. I have been a hairdresser for almost 40 years and have spent the entire time trying to find the perfect shampoo for my hair. I would think I had found it but after a bottle or two, my hair was not working well. I have fine hair and need my hair to be fluffy to balance my head. :-) I also am a shine freak and always striving for my hair to glisten. Since I am addicted to trying anything and everything, I brewed some of the liquid soap and used it on my hair. I wasn't sure what would happen and after applying it and seeing there were absolutely no suds, I was fully expecting the worse but since i wasn't going anywhere, I persisted. After blow drying my hair, I was totally shocked. It was fluffy using only one gel (I normally use 2-3)...........I did not have to add curling iron to get the balance and the shine was beautiful. It also felt so nice and soft yet was still full. Incredible!
Many times, something can see perfect the first time but after using a few times, it builds up and just doesn't do the same job. This is absolutely NOT true with the soap nuts liquid. I always had to wash my hair at night as it wouldn't look the greatest until it had "stuff" in it so the next morning it was usually okay Now my hair looks great from the minute it is done and even is decent the next morning and I only have to do a little touch up......and the results have been consistent.
Incredible product!!!! Thanks for making it available.

  19. Just wanted to let you know how impressed I was.

Posted by Fred on Jun 24th 2012

I recently purchased a bag of soap nuts and mineral salts from your company. The soap nuts were recommended by a recent blog posting by Alisha at Wannabevegan. Her web address for the blog is: http://blog.wannabevegan.com/ Her website e-mail address is: alisha@wannabevegan.com You should let her know that her blog led a customer to you!

I just posted a comment (don't know when it will be up) about my first trial. The noted where I purchased the nuts and how they performed. I can honestly say that I am impressed. My first loads were pants and jeans - the pants all were soiled around the pockets and cuffs, and the jeans were used in my outdoor work. Everything came clean. I did, as a precaution, pre-treat a couple of spots, but the results were far superior to what I honestly expected. All I can say is WOW - you have a convert and a repeat customer.

I urged Wannabevegan to follow up her recent blog post with another on this product - I did not realize that there were more uses for it - such as for washing cars, concentrated liquid soap, pets, hair, etc..... It is a natural product - why not?

Thank you! Just wanted to let you know how impressed I was. Good-bye to Era and Tide, and...........

  20. We are hooked.
